Ian Bennett Signs New 2 Year Contract

Its been coming for a while now and finally today, Ian Bennett has signed a two year contract which shall see the experienced goalkeeper remain at the club until at least the summer of 2014. Bennett has made 72 appearances for the terriers since joining the club in 2010 and he also played a huge role in ensuring Town gained promotion into the Championship by appearing in both semi-final legs against MK Dons.

Injury struck Bennett in the second leg of the semi-finals and this saw him lose his goalkeeping spot to youngster Alex Smithies but his vital saves in the first leg will be remembered by Town fans for a long, long time.

Simon Grayson spoke to the official website regarding the new contract and also showed his delight in having Bennett in the squad;

"It's brilliant news. 'Benno' showed last season what a fantastic goalkeeper he is and he has such influence both on the pitch and around the dressing room with the younger goalkeepers and the rest of the squad. His experience is invaluable and he still has the hunger and desire to be in the team next season."

"We certainly like what we saw of Ian last season, both professionally and in terms of personality, so it's great that a deal has been done. I'm just surprised it's not a four year deal knowing 'Benno'! Everybody was disappointed for him when he missed the Final through injury, but instead 'Benno' was absolutely delighted for Alex. The goalkeeping union here work so closely together and really push each other, so I'm delighted to have him around."

"Alex has such potential, but it's vital that he has people to guide him and to look up to and here he has John Vaughan, Nick Colgan and Ian. He knows he can't rest on his laurels with that standard of competition around, as do the younger lads. It's great to have that level of competition in the group."
