Lee Clark; 'The Only Reason It Hurt Was Because I Loved The Job'

On February 15th 2012 it was revealed to the public that Lee Clark had indeed been sacked as manager of Huddersfield Town despite only being four points off the automatic promotion places in League One. This weekend will see Lee Clark return to The John Smiths Stadium with his current managerial job with Birmingham City who are currently sitting below the terriers in the Championship.

Dean Hoyle Saying It How It Is

Dean Hoyle gave the fans another fantastic interview today as well as showing exactly why the chairman is strongly liked by the footballing world. Hoyle has always been keen to make Huddersfield Town an ambitious club and with promotion into The Championship he believes that the club can now be one of the best in the country to develop players. The transfer window brought with it some top quality signings by Simon Grayson & Hoyle is determined to allow Huddersfield to flourish in this league regardless of the players he has had to lose to bring in new faces.

Here is what Hoyle had to say;

"I say to all our players, old and new, that this football club provides a platform for all they want to achieve. They have the opportunity to play with an ambitious club during exciting times and, if nothing else, they should be looking at Huddersfield Town as a great stepping stone."

"I don't want that to sound defeatist, because we do want our club to go forward and become strong, but I'm just being realistic – this is a great place for players to develop and, if they do produce what they are capable of, then the club will benefit as well."

"The Championship is a fantastic division to be in. I was looking at the League I table over the weekend and thinking how many supporters would X, Y and Z have brought with them to our ground? The two home matches we've had so far against Nottingham Forest and Burnley have attracted big away followings, which makes for a cracking atmosphere at the stadium."

"That helps with whole feeling of matchday, as well as Nigel Clibbens' piggy bank, and it's just great for everyone involved. The Championship is something like the fourth best supported division in the world and we are in it – so to finish even mid-table would make us a top 30 club in the English game and that's something to be proud of. I'm chuffed to bits we are now playing at this level and I think everyone should enjoy it."

Dean Hoyle then went back to the past & admitted that he was way too flexible with his money with Lee Clark in charge but he stated that he has learned from his mistakes without affecting the way the club is run;

"I spoke quite openly about the fact I had allowed Lee Clark to bring in too many players when he was manager – and admitted responsibility for that. I have now allowed Simon to bring in plenty of new players, so some might be thinking 'same old, same old', but I was realistic enough to understand the need at this level. While respecting the squad we had last season, areas needed to be improved and Simon has done it very well. Without getting above ourselves, the additions we have made look good Championship quality, and that's very pleasing."

When asked about Huddersfield Towns preparations for The Championship Hoyle spoke truthfully about how he felt going into this league as well as how the first few Championship games left him feeling;

"We didn't have the best of pre-seasons and nobody was disguising that fact, so going to Cardiff after being knocked out of the Capital One Cup was a tough-looking opener. Cardiff, who have been to the play-offs the last three seasons, were on their home ground having just signed Craig Bellamy and a lot of other players for a lot of money and we were newly promoted, but we went there and gave a fantastic account of ourselves and I think people came away in a very positive frame of mind."

"I can tell you it isn't often Nigel Clibbens is buoyant after a defeat, but putting the result to one side he was very pleased with what he'd seen. Then, after the Forest game, I was thinking 'if Forest are a mid-table side then we're doomed! I thought they were exceptionally good, but at the same time we had our chances and, for our first home game, it was a tough one to come through. Showing that determination never to give up was a great sign and we got something out of it, which was a credit to all involved."

"Against Burnley, who have aspirations to be in the top six, and contrary to what the Burnley press might think, we played them off the park. I thought the 2-0 scoreline was flattering to Burnley on the day and was very pleased with our performance. Down at Ipswich, I again thought we did well and could easily have won it towards the end, when their keeper was inspired. That's the thing in this division. They are all big clubs and, while in the past we have come up against teams with the odd exceptional individual, the Championship clubs have all got plenty of big-name players, many of whom have their sights set on playing in the Premiership."

Grayson Admits Chairman Makes Anything Possible

Simon Grayson has praised the way that Dean Hoyle runs Huddersfield Town Football Club and was keen to state that anything is possible when you have a chairman which backs you as much as what Hoyle does. Grayson was left disappointed with the collapsed loan move that could of seen Jermaine Beckford sign for the terriers on Friday but the manager reflected on a successful transfer window even with losing prolific striker Jordan Rhodes;

"We worked so hard on the Jermaine Beckford deal simply because we felt he would have improved the football club. We have strikers up there who can do the job, but you just want as much quality as you can get and the extra competition for places. I was always looking for an attacking player whether Jordan had left us or not."

"Losing Jordan didn't make a difference to that thinking. We got very close to doing the Jermaine Beckford deal but you have to keep plenty of options. Deals are set up, then they break down, but that's the transfer window for you."

"I think it should close before the season starts because I spent all night on the phone trying to get stuff tied up when, as a manager, you should be concentrating on the game coming up."

Grayson did manage to bring Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Hammill in on loan until January and this is something Grayson is very happy about;

"I'm delighted to have got Adam and I think people could see what he can do. He puts defenders on the back foot by running at people and then he has the quality to pick out a pass. He is a versatile player – he can play off the striker as well as on the right and left and he gives us options. I have worked with him before and know what he's capable of, but he needs to play some games to show that."

"What will happen next on signings I don't know, but anything is achievable because I've got a chairman who wants to back me and we'll do whatever we feel is the right option for us."

Grayson Speaks Out About Rhodes' Departure

Simon Grayson has today more or less seen his number one striker & most valued asset taken away from him in a deal worth in the region of £8m. That man is of course Jordan Rhodes but the gaffer spoke out openly about the situation and stressed how the clubs ambitions have not changed;

"Obviously everyone at the Club is disappointed to see Jordan leave, but this happens all the time in football no matter the Club or league you are in. You cannot realistically keep players at a Club against their will and Jordan made it clear to us that he wanted to talk to Blackburn Rovers, but as we have said all along a transfer would only happen on our terms and this is exactly the case."
"I would like to thank Jordan for all he has done for this Club. He’s been an absolute joy to work with every day; he’s always looking to improve and all the speculation surrounding him this year has not affected his professionalism for a second. He has achieved some unbelievable things here and played a massive part as Huddersfield Town has moved forward."
"It’s a shame he won’t be part of the next stage of our Championship journey but that’s life and we move on quickly in football. We have been planning behind the scenes for the eventuality that Jordan would leave for a long time now, even though we hoped it wouldn’t happen, and we know our options. We have developed a good squad of players here and our targets for this season and beyond have not changed just because Jordan is departing. There is no lack of ambition at this Club, that’s for sure, as we have shown and will show over the coming weeks, months and years.  Buying and selling is an integral part of that."

The Rhodes deal is set to break the clubs record fee but is still to go through its final stages before Rhodes officially becomes a Blackburn Rovers player. Expect this to happen tomorrow morning as the striker did indeed have his medical at Rovers today. We wish him all the best in the next stage of his career.

Clayton: I Can't Wait To Get Going

Clayton has only just joined Huddersfield Town but already he has spoke out about the reasons behind becoming a terrier as well as how ambitious the club is under chairman Dean Hoyle. Clayton joined Town this morning for an undisclosed fee on a three year contract;

"It's the ambition of the place to be honest; once the Manager called me and I came down to meet the Chairman it was obvious. Everything about Huddersfield Town is moving forward and I want to go to the same place as the Club - I think this is a great place to achieve that."

"I want to play in the Premier League; I'm young and ambitious and I think this is an ambitious team too. I think the Club and I can grow together. I can't wait to get going. I was in this league last year and there's nothing to fear about the Championship. People have seen what Southampton and Norwich have done and although I'm not saying that we'll go straight up - I'm not getting carried away - I think the ingredients are here for us to do well."

Clayton is reunited with former manager Simon Grayson who he played under whilst at Leeds United;

"Obviously I've worked with Simon and 'Snods' before and I know how we works day-to-day. I've worked with Ian Miller for even longer as he was at Manchester City with me. We got on well as they are great people to work with and I enjoyed my football under them, which I'm sure can be the same again. Steve Eyre is a good friend of mine too - he's been coaching me since I was nine years old. I know I'm going to enjoy the day-to-day work and that's the most important factor for me when you join a new football club, because it will mean you play your best football."

"The Chairman is infectious; he's a top man. He really speaks the truth and lets you know exactly what's going on at the Club. After meeting him, and knowing the staff here, it was a no-brainer really. I like to do a bit of everything in central midfield. Carlisle deployed me in quite an attacking role, but when I first arrived at Leeds it was quite a defensive one. I like to do both; I can get my goals in but I like a tackle too."

Clayton will join a completely new squad but insists that he will start to feel completely at home with the terriers;

"As soon as you get in the dressing room it will soon feel like home. I'm sure I'll get some stick about what I wear, but I'll give some back! I can't wait to get the first training session done."

Clayton Switches From Rivals To Join Town

Huddersfield Town have this morning announced the signing of midfielder Adam Clayton on a three year contract for an undisclosed fee. He joins from West Yorkshire rivals Leeds United after being placed on the transfer list due to contract re-nogiotiatians fell through between the player & the club.

Clayton is reunited with Town manager Simon Grayson and brings excellent ball playing qualities to the squad along with both the ability to act as an attacking midfielder or defensive midfielder. Clayton is a former England U20 international and joined Leeds United from Manchester City in a spell which saw him appear 43 times in the Championship, scoring 6 times for Leeds United.

Simon Grayson spoke about the newest signing this morning;

"Adam is a good footballer. He handles the ball and has a good energy about him - he had a great season last year and scored some important goals. We're delighted to have got him. He's a player I admired when he was at Carlisle and Manchester City and we're delighted to secure his services to this football club. I think it shows our intent in the level of players we want to sign."

"I think we need to score goals from all areas of the pitch. We can't just rely on the strikers to do it; we need the wide players, the centre halves and the midfield players to chip in. Now we have players who are capable of getting into the box and that can contribute in set-piece situations."

"We can't simply rely on Jordan to get us another 40 goals this season, just as we can't rely on the other strikers. We need goals from all areas of the pitch and Adam has that capability, but he also has other sides to his game that I've seen when I've worked previously with him."

"I think things are moving along nicely in all departments. You have to strike a blend and get the partnerships right all over the pitch and we are still working hard behind the scenes to get one or two other things done. We're looking to keep improving all the time, but we're getting the right ingredients for a really decent squad. With losing Damien Johnson and Tommy Miller, we did feel we needed players in the midfield area and we've brought two young, hungry players in with Adam and Olly Norwood. It's also great that they both have experience of the Championship; Adam played all last season in the Championship and Oliver played half a season for Coventry, so we will only benefit from that experience."

Interview With Lifelong Huddersfield Town Fan Ben Thornes

We recently asked all Huddersfield Town fans on Twitter if they would like to be interviewed by us with the aim of the interview to get a true, lifelong fans opinions on the club past/current issues. Up stepped Ben Thornes and the rest is self explanatory...

Bold - HTFC Hub  Italic - Ben Thornes

Let's start off this 10 question interview with a little bit about yourself and how you came to be a Huddersfield fan.

My 1st memory of watching Town was a Tuesday night game away at Scarborough probably 1992/1 and the flood lights went out! Got into watching town through my dad as I'm sure most others do, he's been going since '71. Me , I'm 25 live with my girlfriend in Dewsbury and I'm a fire alarm service engineer.

Let's kick things off Ben. What a season it has been which ultimately ended in a successful promotion campaign. What's it been like to be a Huddersfield Town fan this season?

Awful!

The season started with the horrific hangover from black Sunday at Old Trafford, disses pointing draws with Bury, Rochdale and the pathetic defensive minded shift we put in at Hartlepool did not help!

I personally at this stage was getting annoyed by Lee Clark and his what I perceived as negative football to preserve the famous " unbeaten run".

We then went on a winning run including a really good performance and 3-0 win at Sheffield United. At that point I think, looking back, it was probably the highlight of the regular season.

However we continued to draw too many games and by the time we won away at Yeovil Clark seemed certain to go to elsewhere.

I never really felt we were going to grab the bull by the horns and get a top 2 finish (talk of 100 points seemed so far away after another poor performance at home to Carlisle new years day).

Eventually I was glad to see the end of the Clark reign but will always try and remember the positives in him, such as the way he never blamed the referee etc etc. unfortunately for him though he failed.

So in came Simon Grayson however the same frustrating feeling seemed to follow us.

We all knew we should/ could be doing better but the performances just weren't there.

More point throwing away at Bury and a defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and promotion was all but over!

No way were that shower showing the guts to go up at the 3rd attempt in the play offs!

And then Ched Evans got sent down. A decent performance on the last day v Yeovil and I was thinking ..... Maybe (again) just maybe!!

Jordan Rhodes banging goals in the semi and we were 90 minuets away (AGAIN)  only this time our opposition were the ones who had "just missed out" and who "didn't have their top scorer available" (all be it for very very different reasons to us 12 months previously)

A tense 90 minuets followed and the rest is history!!

So in a nutshell the season was frustrating and underwhelming.

The play offs were tense, then even more tense then those 11 years of sheer agony were banished with 11 kicks of a football!  It was my 3 rd promotion watching town. The worst season of the 3 but the best feeling of the 3 by far!

The high's and the low's of being a Huddersfield Town fan all summed up in one frustrating yet incredible season! Who, in your opinion was the best player in a blue and white shirt this year?

Ha ha . That's a bit of a dolly that isn't it! The king. The junior Dennis Law! Jordan Rhodes. The man is incredible!

A reason I think we failed last year is because he wasn't played any where near enough. Iv you have s 20 goal season striker he plays. That's if your in la liga or the Sunday alliance Bradford league.

Other than that Lee Novak, Peter Clark, Ian Bennett and Alex Smithies were as good as usual.

Sean Morison was out standing and Callum Woods had a promising start.

Kalum Higgingbothom looked the real deal in the play offs.

Other than that you would struggle, and I doubt if any central midfielder got even 1 vote for player of the season.

Rhodes has had an incredible season for the terriers but with this brings interest in the form of top Championship clubs & Premiership as well. His future is very much undecided with Huddersfield Town who are adamant he is going no where just yet. How do you think his future shall pan out and what shirt shall he be wearing next season?

He said on the BBC " ideally I'll be playing in the championship for Town next season".
I believe him. He's from s football family and his dad will no doubt tell him having maybe even 6 months at Town in the championship won't do any harm.

So hopefully a blue and white one!

Rhodes may well be playing football at The Galpharm next season in The Championship but a fair few ex-terriers shall not be. After achieving promotion, Grayson immediately set to work on sorting out his squad for next season and let 7 players go. Cadamarteri, Clarke, Naysmith, Chippendale, Thomas, Roberts & Miller all have left Huddersfield Town. What do you think about this bold move by Grayson?

No just sensible really. Unfortunately as Dean Hoyle him self has said Clark was allowed to bring in far too many players. He offered Danny Cads a contract in the summer and he didn't get on the pitch until new years eve!

Huddersfield Town also failed to keep hold of Damien Johnson who was a major part of the Huddersfield squad and one that a lot of fans wanted to see play in The Championship. What's your thoughts on Damien Johnson and what do you believe was the reason for him not staying at the terriers and also choosing Fleetwood Town?

I wish him the best of luck. One of the few (if only) midfielders to stand up and be counted.
I think he's gone to Fleetwood for financial gain. And I don't blame him for it.
But I wouldn't have offered him a contract. Or only on a pay as you play. He's only played 3/4 of a season out of the 2 he's been with us. Great player. Just always injured!

We also wish Damien Johnson the best of luck at newly promoted Fleetwood Town. Let's talk about transfers and the rumours that have been flying around, the strongest of which are Clayton, Andrews, Green & Peltier. What do you think of these players and also is their any players you personally would bring to Town if in Grayson's shoes?

Messi!

I don't pay much attention to the rumours. I believe it when there on the back page of the examiner with a town shirt on!

I would hope midfielders are high on the shopping list. Sean Morrison would be a must buy for me and a striker as I'm not an Alan lee fan.

Sean Morrison has been a rock at the back for us and so we agree that he should be pretty high on the transfer list. What would you like to see from Huddersfield Town this coming season?

Promotion!

Shankley said "aim for the ceiling and you won't get off the floor. Aim for the sky and you'll get the ceiling"

I certainly don't think we will flirt with relegation.

High expectations from yourself then Ben. With a whole load of new teams to play this coming season in The Championship, who will you be looking forward to meeting the most?

The premier league teams from last year, Wolves, Blackburn, Bolton

Then the derby games like Leeds and Wednesday.

I'm looking forward to the London away games for a few ales on the train.

All of them will be great not to be going up Yeovil, Exeter and the likes.

Plus the home games. There will be away fans for the 1st time in 11 years! I can't wait to be honest. That's why we simply had to go up. I don't know if town fans could have faced another year in league 1 (south)

Some fantastic away and home games awaiting Huddersfield Town next season! Over the past few years Huddersfield Town has changed dramatically and the majority of this has happened because of new chairman Dean Hoyle. How much has he brought to the club?

With out Dean Hoyle, I don't think  I'm exaggerating now, I think we could be non league or lower reaches of league 2.

We were going backwards big time. Ken Davy isn't a football man. He had appointed Andy Ritchie our summer transfer activity was Malvin Kamara on a free because Port Vale had released him. We were a mess!

Every thing the club has achieved both on and off the pitch can be credited to Dean Hoyle. I could probably fill an essay with how much better the feeling round the club is. But I won't. All I need to say ( again) is ; we were an utter mess pre Dean Hoyle. THANK YOU DEANO!

Thankyou very much for doing this interview Ben. Last question, the club has a keen interest in getting close to its fans and has been named family club of the year on numerous occasions. How does this make you feel to be a Huddersfield Town fan & has this club/fan relationship benefited yourself in any way?

Bit of a tricky one!

For lads like me who like to sing and shout the 'family club of the year' award can get a bit 'annoying'. Especially when it was the only thing we had won in 10 years!

However, the club have to cater for all ages to ensure the next generation of fans. And it's hard to not like the way that the club made the trophy so accessible to fans for photographs. Dean Hoyle even took pictures for some fans!

So I'm 50/50 on it. Although I'd love our home atmosphere to be a bit more aggressive to help sour the team on. I appreciate why the club do what they do!

Thanks a lot! UTT

Grayson Praises Club After Play-Off Victory

Simon Grayson at the end of the second leg last
night with chairman Dean Hoyle

Simon Grayson was delighted with the outcome of last nights match but took time to praise the club with his post match interview. Here is what he had to say;

"It was a very nervous and tense night, which you expect with the Play-Offs because we knew MK Dons would give us a really good game. MK Dons passed the ball around and caused us one or two problems, but we stuck to our game, got the result and that is all that matters. I had belief that the players could produce a performance; I think we could have killed the game off with the opportunities that we had."

Grayson proceeded to state that the impact Alan Smith had on the game was inevitable an something he had seen coming;

"You could see the scenario of Alan Smith coming on, who had been booed all night scoring a goal - thankfully he did it with only a couple of minutes to go. When there are two minutes to go anything can happen, but thankfully we saw it out."

A trip to Wembley now awaits Huddersfield Town where they will be up against fellow Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.

"It has got the ingredients of being a great game with Yorkshire pride at stake, but there is a bigger prize - that being a ticket to the Championship. We will go there in good spirits and play how we want to play. We will work hard in the week leading up to it on the training ground to make sure that we finish off the job. There is no point going to Wembley if you're not going to win it and that is our ambition.
"The teams know a lot about each other and it will come down to which team can handle the occasion on the day. A bit of magic or maybe a decision going for you or against you can win you the game."

The Town fans were in full voice last night and filled up the complete Brittania Rescue stand to create a cracking atmosphere. Grayson talked about how important the fans are;

"It was a cracking atmosphere - and we knew it would be. I think the Club did a lot to drum up support and make sure there was a positive vibe around the place and that is what it is all about. A trip to Wembley is what the football club deserves; the Chairman has been immense for the Club and hopefully we can repay him by getting promoted to the Championship."

As you can see, Huddersfield Town are currently the most off-form team within the play-off positions in League 1. They have picked up less than a third of the amount of points that rival club Sheffield Wednesday have picked up in the last five games which is why they have slipped down the league table to fifth below MK Dons. All the other play-off promotion contenders seem to have peaked right towards the end of the season and so they shall all be going into the games on a massive high compared to Huddersfield Town who's last back to back win came in the middle of March. What may  become vital is that MK Dons shall take second leg home advantage in the semi-final tie against Huddersfield which is something you want your team to have.

If you was to go on form then Huddersfield Town would be the first team to be knocked out in the play-offs and fail to reach the final which this year is down at Wembley. However, football is full of surprises and a team which goes into the play-offs as slight underdogs tend to play with no fear which can bring the best out of the whole squad. Simon Grayson shall undoubtedly be trying to motivate his players come the play-offs time and his experience with both Blackpool & Leeds has seen him in these positions before. It could well be a stroke of genius by Dean Hoyle to employ a manager who will be able to cope with all the pressures that come with a team in the play-offs. Did he realise that Huddersfield Town was never going to achieve automatic promotion under Lee Clark and ultimately decided to just get a manager on board that has a good past record in the play-offs so that the club have got the best chance of promotion this year? No one shall know apart from Hoyle himself and as the play-offs loom ever closer, the question is...Does Huddersfield Town & Simon Grayson have it in them to defy current form and obtain promotion against all the odds?
